About the Opportunity

Powin’s Hardware Engineering team is seeking an Applications Engineer to design and develop software for electrical power and thermal management systems. This individual will be tasked with developing software for special use cases, along with systems that control devices and networks.

The Applications Engineer will be expected to use their extensive engineering background to create diagrams and models to guide programmers. This individual will partner with customers and business leaders to learn more about their needs, then incorporate the information gathered into designing all the components of a control system. The Applications Engineer will need to ensure these components are compatible, integrate properly, and to perform maintenance to repair any bugs. The ideal candidate will have experience working collaboratively with engineering, product, and management teams.

Job Duties

  • Create requirements for design projects to meet controls and data acquisition needs
  • Participate in specification and design reviews, assessing the needs/concerns of all stakeholders to ensure system functionality will meet necessary requirements
  • Review and understand technical drawings and requirements
  • Create and manage technical files for all projects
  • Provide guidance for mechanical and electrical design teams, locally and internationally, with respect to testing and validation requirements
  • Own the design, development, and validation processes for environmental controls and monitoring from concept to commissioning
  • Train team members, including authorized service providers (ASPs), in proper system operation and troubleshooting strategies, and provide technical support as necessary
  • Design all components of the system, including hardware and software, and analyzing how they will integrate electrically, mechanically, and operationally
  • Creating various diagrams, schematics, models, and work instructions
  • Ensuring continual system functionality after maintenance and testing
  • Document and track of all aspects of the application for future upgrades and maintenance
  • Work cross functionally and inter-departmentally, conveying concepts and clear understanding of the system to others with different backgrounds and degrees
  • Offer flexibility with design iterations and changes in direction
  • Explore and develop new technologies to further improve the Powin product
  • Act as the main point of contact for controls questions and updates
  • Serve as the liaison between HW and SW Engineering

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 5-7 years of Applications Engineering or related industry experience
  • Experience with battery energy storage and/or thermal management/HVAC systems preferred
  • CAD experience for creating and reviewing designs, schematics, etc.
  • Experience with Linux operating systems
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suites/programs
  • Adept with PLC, controls, and networking hardware (e.g., Advantech, Distech Controls, OnLogic, Schneider, Honeywell, etc.)
  • Competence with SW, PLC, and controls programming languages, including but not limited to:
  • Required: C/C++, EC-gfx, Node-RED, RESTful API, Python, BACnet, Java, Modbus-RTU, Modbus-TCP
  • Preferred: JavaScript, Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams, Sequential Flow Charts, Instruction Lists

Skillset

  • Strong project management and communication skills are a must
  • Capability to effectively communicate with all parties included in the project and to answer all questions any stakeholders may have on how the software/hardware operates
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively connect with executives and field technicians alike
  • Detail-oriented to validate all parts of an application integrate and operate as intended
  • Problem-solving skills are important to ensure any issues that arise during design and testing are identified and eliminated
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, rapidly expanding environment
  • Independent problem solving and workload management for multiple projects and tasks
  • Curiosity and initiative to be innovative and always trying to figure out how things work
